[AP NEWS 4-15]

1. US military says it will release Associated Press photographer Bilal Hussein. That after the Iraqi judicial panel dismissed the last remaining criminal allegation against him. Hussein has spent more than two years in custody in Iraq.

2. Speaking at the Associated Press annual meeting, Senator Barack Obama said he regrets his comments about small-town voters. He says those comments are distracting from more critical issues in his campaign.

3. Police in Vermont say a woman reported missing with her two daughters waded into a brook carrying one of them. She eluded a rescue attempt before mother and child were swept away and died. Searchers later found the body of her other daughter downstream.

4. And this Red Sox fan came up with a sneaky way to bury his baseball rival. He stashed a Red Sox jersey in the foundation of the new Yankee Stadium now under construction. Workers painstakingly removed the shirt and the Yankees could now seek criminal charges.

1.Pope Benedict says he is deeply ashamed of the clergy sex abuse scandal and vow to keep paedophiles out of the priesthood. The pope made the comments while travelling on his first papal visit to the United States.

2. The Justice Department is pledging to take a look at how the proposed Northwest-Delta merger would affect consumers. The airlines want to complete the transaction which would make them the world’s largest airline by the end of the year.

3. A federal jury found the so-called DC madam guilty of running a high-end prostitution ring. Deborah Palfrey said her now-defunct business was an "erotic fantasy service". Louisiana Senator David Witer was linked to the case, but the republican did not testify.

4. It’s down to the wire for tax filers. Today is the deadline to get those 1040s in, and many are rushing to get through the paperwork. There is extra incentive this year to get everything in on time because the federal stimulus relief is tied to this year’s returns.

1.Pope Benedict has been getting a grand welcome in Washington on his first official visit to the US. His popemobile passed cheering crowds. And at a White House ceremony, a crowd of more than 13,000 people sang ‘Happy birthday’ to the pontiff. He turns 81 today.

2.President Bush is taking a different approach to global warming. He is proposing a new target for stopping the growth of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. Bush also challenged Congress to pass climate legislation that won't hurt the economy.

3.Crews in Colorado are making progress against a fast-moving wildfire. It is one of three blazes that have now claimed lives of two volunteer firefighters and a pilot of a firefighting plane. Crews are hoping lighter winds and rising humidity will help them battle the flames.

4.German polar bear fans have another star to visit. This zoo in Stuttgart presented 4-month-old Wilbaer to the public. Workers brought the fluffy cub outdoors alongside his mother, Corinna.

1. Tens of thousands of worshipers packed Nationals Park in Washington for Pope Benedict's first public Mass of his US pilgrimage. The pontiff praised America as a land of opportunity and hope. He expressed grief that the nation's promise fell short for blacks and Indians.

2. A suicide bomber struck during the funeral for two anti-al-Qaeda tribesmen. At least 50 people were killed in the attack north of Baghdad and 20 others were hurt in the blast.

3. Roughly one in five US troops is suffering from major depression or post-traumatic stress from serving in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. An equal number has suffered brain injuries. That's according to a study by the RAND Corporation.

1. Pope Benedict told diplomats at the United Nations that promoting human rights is the best way to bring equality and security to the world. The Pope is also visiting a synagogue on the first day of the New York leg of his US trip.

2. A magnitude 5.2 earthquake rattled much of the Midwest early this morning. But there wasn’t major damage or injuries that occurred along the fault line responsible for a series of major earthquakes in the early 1800s.

3. The Canadian government has labeled a common ingredient in water bottles dangerous. The rule has put pressure on the US government and retailers to stop carrying items with bisphenol A. Wal-Mark says it plans to be BPA-free by next year.

4. Snickers, the cocker spaniel is on his way to a new home after being abandoned on a remote Pacific island for four months. The ship that rescued his owners wouldn’t take the animal, but cruise ship workers and others banded together to rescue him in style.
